College League Realignment Blues
Over the past 5 years there has been a lot of league changes in college sports as you are aware. They may have their reasons for the changes. It is most certainly money related. They may have their reasons like better TV contracts. Maybe there are legitimate reasons. But quite honestly it makes no sense. You have Maryland in the Big Ten. Syracuse and Pittsburgh are now in the ACC. The ACC used to be teams along the Atlantic Coast. That’s the name! Syracuse and Pittsburgh might as well be in the Canadian league. Pittsburgh is much further from the Atlantic Ocean than Penn State. Louisville is in the ACC. Isn’t Louisville in Kentucky? And Penn State is now in the Big Ten! Rutgers is in the Big Ten. The Big Ten is now 12 or 13 teams. Shouldn’t they reconsider their name. Am I the only person looking at this and saying this is just not right or logical. It makes no sense.
The problem is this is beginning to wreck havoc on border rivalries. Maryland no longer will play Virginia. That’s a tragedy. Imagine Ohio State announced they are moving to a new league. The students would probably burn the campus down facing the fact that they would not play Michigan regularly. The biggest winner in all of this is Georgetown. Now they can actually win their league again in basketball. There is no one left to play in the Big East. Something has to be done about all these changes.
Let’s talk about some logical fixes to this situation. Somebody has to step in and fix this sports gerrymandering. Gerrymandering if you are not aware is how they cut up the political territory so one party can stay permanently in power. In this case there are few things that actually make sense. Penn State should be in the same league as Pittsburgh. These are teams that should play each other permanently and would make a good rivalry. Maryland needs to be back in a league with Virginia. Maryland should play Georgetown. The two teams are like 30 miles apart but have not been in the same league ever. North Carolina and South Carolina should be in the same league. That sounds logical. Finally the University of Miami and Florida State and the University of Florida should be in the same league. They are in the same state! All of this makes common sense, but that apparently is not what the people who made these decisions think.
